Branding yourself is/was a new(ish) idea for me. Sure, one day I would like to be a "household" name. When people think of a good young adult novel or a top seller I want them to think of my name. As one article pointed out, freelance writers do have to link all of their work themselves because they can't guarantee that any one publication will direct readers to other works by the author.
Alright, clearly I have a social media issue. I used to hate Twitter (I couldn't quite grasp the idea of it) and I keep my Facebook super private. I didn't have a link to either site on this page for a long time. In fact, I created a second Twitter account for school/professional use. I didn't see a point in a professional social media use, but I totally get it now. Or at least I think I do. It's important to be able to reach out to others in your field and share your work. Its also important to reach out to potential readers and market yourself. For example, I'm friends with a few of my favorite authors on Facebook and have emailed back and forth with them. Recently I started following them on Twitter. Authors have a closer relationship with their fan base and advertise their own writing and other works through social media immediately to their fans.
