Alright so I'm not going to lie, I've googled myself. We all have. I'm either doing it wrong or I don't have much of an internet presence. The only thing that I could actually find of myself is my foursquare profile from a check in at a restaurant or something from a few years ago. I could either look at this as a blessing or a curse. Sure, it's a good thing that there isn't anything embarrassing to be found of me on the internet. But there also isn't anything good for me either. Authors like to have recognition for their work. I want recognition. And yet I am completely non-existant in the professional and cyber world. I need to start building myself up in a good way) through my blog and on other media sites. Naturally, I would be okay with an employer googling me. Hard to be embarrassed by something if it's not even there.
I know nothing about my rights as an author. Yeah, I said it. Nothing. Not a single thing. I won't judge myself too hard for that though, I am fairly new to the business. That being said, I would definitely need an agent. I wholeheartedly believe in the relationship between an author and an agent. An agent can be your best friend (or your worst enemy) so it's important to find a good one with your best intentions at heart. It's important to find out about the agent before you start working with them too. Find other professionals in the business that you trust and look up to and see what they think about the agent and if they have any suggestions for agents. I think my work has a better chance of being read by more people if I posted it online. In fact, I have a tab on this site for my work because I wanted to post it online. My only fear in this is that someone could take my work and claim it as their own. People have no problems with stealing on the internet. And honestly, if someone likes my work that much that they wanted a copy for themselves I wouldn't charge them for it at this point. I just want recognition for my work. I most certainly plan to use brandYourself to improve my online standing. I plan to use/already have started using the sites and resources offered in this class, and I find them to be invaluable. I think social network boosters might make us all look the same, but in a way that's a good thing. No one wants to be the outcast with no links to the work environment we all want to be in. It's also a good thing for other authors and publishers and agents to see you involved in your community as a serious author. To stand out, obviously a necessity, I'm not sure what I could do. I know I speak freely on here, and often, usually using this as a personal outlet for my life struggles but
